I am a firm believer that primer makes all the difference when applying your makeup. A clean face is key, but finding a good primer can completely change the finish & duration your makeup stays on throughout the day.
Primer is similar to foundation in the way that what works for someone else may not work for you. Results also may vary with the foundation you use, so it’s good to test out a few before taking the plunge and buying one. Thankfully primer is one of those products that is normally at a very reasonable price point and has a long life.
I have tested so many over the years and I’ve been getting a lot of questions on what works, so I’m going to give you my top 6, in no particular order, their benefits, and the skin they work best on.
This was the first primer I ever used & continued to use for 5 years. It’s a great combination of matte & moisture to help your makeup stay on all day. All you need is one squeeze to cover your face with a light layer for all day wear. This is perfect if you’re not looking to add any glow to your makeup but just simply want blurring and some help keeping your makeup on all day long.
I know that’s a mouthful but the best primer deserves a royaly long name right? This has become my #1 when I’m really wanting to glow all day long. I can tell a total difference in my makeup when I have this on. It brightens my skin and evens out any skin imperfections with its translucent violet light. It also hydrates your skin, which is always a plus to me. I wear this when I want to wear a full face with foundation or a half face with just powder.
This primer is a happy medium. I use this one when I want a more natural look. It doesn’t give as bright of a glow, but it’s light & keeps my makeup on all day. Vitamin E is infused in this formula to minimize fine lines & wrinkles. For me it makes a huge difference on my forehead and around my eyes where I have little creases, it smooths them right out.
My favorite time to use this primer is when I’m going for an all natural look. I will warn you, you have to be careful because one drop too many will make your face oily. If you already have oily skin & fight shininess, I would avoid this primer. Natural ingredients make up the formula to brighten, soothe, & hydrate your skin. (Application: fill test tube once and do a small dot on your forehead both cheeks and chin to avoid an oily or greasy ending)
I pull this stuff out when my face is feeling puffy and dead. My favorite part of this primer is that it is infused with coconut water to help hydrate your skin. That’s what I believe is the main reason this works so well to depuff your skin. Too Faced compares it to an energy drink for your skin & I have to say they are right about that. Next time you wake up with your skin feeling dull, lather up with this to start your day with or without makeup.
This balm has grown on me, while it’s still not my go to by any means I feel it’s noteworthy, especially for people with oily skin. Lychee extract is used to plump and prime your skin on its dull days. This primer has a matte finish with a touch of illumination. If you have more oily skin, I recommend this balm for you.
I wanted to mention a few more products that have become important to my daily routine now that I have a commute. By the time I get to the office my makeup just feels sticky. I’ve started carrying around at least one of these in my bag at all times to give my skin a reviving spritz of hydration. You can pick up a full size bottle or a mini size (great to keep in your purse) at Sephora.
