Travel guide: Helen, Ga

Every year since graduating my girl friends & I have made it a mission to go on at least one girls trip a year. Thankfully all of the weddings we have had, have come in handy bringing us together quite often, but since wedding season ended in August we haven’t seen each other.

Before planning this trip, we did some research based on prices and proximity to all of us. We knew we wanted to go to the mountains, but weren’t sure where. I am the only one that has to fly so that played a role in our final decision to take a trip to Dahlonega. Thankfully I have friends that are willing to literally meet in the middle so that we can all be together. The journey to Dahlonega/ Helen was a quick and easy flight from NY to Atlanta and then a 1.5 car ride to our cabin. I ended up taking a lyft from the airport just because it made more sense, and it was actually pretty reasonable for the mileage.

Accommodations

We stayed in a cabin we found on Airbnb , tucked away in the woods with a stunning Mountain View. The cabin had a large deck that wrapped around overlooking the mountains. The top deck had a large table and grill so if you were to visit when it was a bit warmer it would be ideal for cooking out. On the lower deck, you could relax in the hot tub, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

The cabin had an open spacious layout which was nice since there were 12 of us. There was plenty of seating and beds. Our location was perfect, right in the middle of downtown Helen & Dahlonega. Both are such cute, quaint towns that look like they hopped out of a hallmark movie, especially Helen. Everyone we met had southern hospitality and to be honest every once in a while I need a good dose of it.

Activities

Montaluce Winery & Restaurant

I wasn’t able to visit the winery since I had to work Friday, but my friends had a blast. They went while it was raining and were able to sip wine by the cozy fire next to the balcony overlooking the grounds.

The tasting portions that came with the wines were very generous. They also gave the cheese board & hummus appetizer a 10/10. The grounds were very well taken care of and truly made you feel like you were in wine country.

Hiking & a picnic at Dukes Creek falls

Saturday, we relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company. It was so nice to sleep in
(relatively speaking… I slept till 8 which is late for me) coffee by the fire looking out the floor to ceiling windows at the mountainscape. Once we finally decided to get out of our pj’s we bundled up and headed to Dukes creek falls for a nice 2.5 mile afternoon hike.

We did some research on the app All Trails, which is designed to help you find trails of all levels for hiking, cycling and climbing no matter where you are. We chose this one specifically because it was intermediate and not extremely long. Since the sun goes down at 5, and we didn’t get out until 2, we had to be picky about how long the trail was.

This trail was great. A leisurely walk and the view was breathtaking, especially when you got to the falls at the bottom. Once we got back to the top of the mountain we enjoyed a picnic. It was so great that the park had picnic tables and also a restroom at the top of the mountain. It was the perfect winter afternoon.

An evening in Helen

After our hike we headed into Helen to hang out for the evening. This town was absolutely adorable. We all kept walking around saying how we felt like we were in Epcot or a Hallmark movie. All of the buildings looked like they were out of a German story book. After walking around and of course exploring the candy store, we headed to the local pub.

We spent happy hour playing games and drinking local cider & our favorite German beer Schofferhofer, which you should definitely try especially coming from the girl that doesn’t drink beer. We ended the night with dinner at Mexican and lots of laughter. My 24 hour trip to Dahlonega, Ga with my girls was the perfect way to kick off the new year.

All of my southerners should definitely check out this cute little town the next time you’re looking for a weekend retreat, no matter what time of year!
